2024 in Review: Getting Ship Done

Han Wang
Co-founder

2024 was a whirlwind year for our team.

Over the year, we’ve quintupled our customer base—bringing on customers like Anthropic, Cursor, and Perplexity—and Mintlify-powered docs are read by millions of developers worldwide.

As the year wraps up, we’ve taken a moment to reflect on the customer experiences that inspired our biggest product milestones.

No more git gatekeeping of docs

Developers have long appreciated Mintlify’s git sync, but it created barriers for cross-functional teammates unfamiliar with the workflow. Git was becoming a bottleneck that burdened developers as sole maintainers of docs, and frustrated teammates who couldn’t make edits independently.

Documentation is always better off as a team sport. That’s why we completely revamped our Web Editor into a WYSIWYG experience. Now, anyone—from marketing to design—can contribute to documentation regardless of their git knowledge.

Finding answers faster with intelligent search & chat

When users visit your documentation with a specific goal, getting them to an answer quickly is key to a good experience. To speed up this flow, we’ve made major performance improvements to search and introduced a new way to interact with content: AI Chat.

Not only did we modernize the search bar’s look and feel, but we also made it smarter. Now, search returns results only from the version a user is viewing and excludes hidden pages. These subtle improvements add up to a faster, more relevant search experience.

Sometimes, search alone isn’t enough, especially when users don’t know the right keywords. For example, if readers searched for “customization” but the docs referred to it as “personalization,” they could hit a frustrating dead end.

To solve this, we introduced AI Chat. It provides intelligent, context-aware answers directly from your documentation, either within the docs or through an in-product chat widget.

Since its launch, AI Chat has become an integral part of how users find answers in their workflows. In just six months, customers have logged over 500,000 chat queries in their documentation.

More flexibility for privacy and customization

Not all documentation is meant to be public. Whether for privacy or personalization—like restricting content based on the user’s subscription—some companies needed more control over who can access specific docs.

To meet this need, we introduced Authentication. You can now make your documentation private by default, granting access only after readers authenticate. This can be applied across all docs or specific pages, and it helps you protect sensitive information, whether to keep competitors out or ensure a launch stays under wraps.

We support various authentication methods, including OAuth and universal passwords, but the standout feature is the ability to authenticate directly via the Mintlify dashboard. This highly requested addition allows customers to limit docs access to employees-only, making it ideal for internal use cases like engineering specs.

Docs and product updates, all in one place

It’s critical for users to see what’s new, whether it’s a bug fix or big release. When product information is scattered across platforms—docs in one place, changelog updates in another—it reduces discoverability and adds unnecessary effort for users to track down what they need.

Now, you can host your Changelog directly in Mintlify, so updates can live alongside documentation. This makes it easier for users to discover what’s new and how it works, all without having to jump between platforms. And for teams, it simplifies workflows by allowing them to update docs and share feature releases in one unified space.

Changelogs are only the beginning. In 2025, stay tuned as we expand support for even more content types that naturally belong alongside your documentation.

Offloading manual updates onto AI Assistant

Across customers, from tiny startups to enterprises, one thing is clear—there’s never enough time to make all the desired updates to docs. A major hurdle is the high activation energy required for maintenance. Tasks like manually tracking down every mention of an outdated feature are tedious and time-consuming, yet critical for providing clarity to end users.

This year, we introduced AI Assistant to help reduce the effort of maintaining documentation. From renaming features to polishing writing or generating changelogs, it takes on the grunt work, making it easier to keep your docs up to date while allowing you to focus on meaningful content.

We’re only getting started

This post only scratches the surface. Dozens of improvements—like auto-hosting docs at /llms.txt, customizable pre-built themes, and better OpenAPI stability—come together to make Mintlify the exceptional experience it is today.

As we head into 2025, we’re more excited than ever to push Mintlify even further for our customers. Thank you for being part of the journey, and cheers to everything we’ll build together next.
